炭疽 Anthrax はまれであるが重症化する，芽胞を形成する炭疽菌による人獣共通感染症 a rare but serious infectious zoonotic disease caused by the spore-forming bacterium _Bacillus anthracis_ である。北米では，動物のアウトブレイクが発生するのは通常高温で乾燥した気候の夏季である。ヒトの感染例はまれで，通常炭疽に感染した動物との直接の接触や処分作業，または皮革や毛皮，ウールなどとの直接の接触による。2024年初期に動物の炭疽常在地域において in a geographic region with enzootic anthrax，通常とは異なる冬季のヒトの皮膚炭疽感染が発生し，調査が行われた。
Investigation and Outcomes
2024年1月4日，50代男性の牧場所有者が，発熱，白血球増多，右手首の黒色痂皮，右上肢の広範囲の浮腫と水疱の診断のため病院を受診した； 炭疽感染が疑われた。11日前の2023年12月24日に，牧場内で突然死した子羊1頭の処分を行っていた。この牧場は，動物間の炭疽常在地域として知られている a region with enzootic anthrax, known as the "Anthrax Triangle" に近接する，テキサス州 a Texas county にある。この患者ともう1人が肉を調理し seasoned and cooked the meat，肉は良く加熱し，ほかの3人とともに食べられた。これら5人のうち，皮膚炭疽の症状を発症したのはこの患者のみで，腸炭疽 gastrointestinal anthrax の症状を発症したものはいなかった。
この患者は当初1月1日にかかりつけ医を受診し，軟部組織感染症に対する経験的治療として，抗生物質による治療 a course of cephalexin が開始された。炭疽は疑われていなかった。3日間の治療に反応しないため，病院を受診し，臨床症状と病歴から炭疽が疑われ，創部スワブと血液検体採取後に，非全身性皮膚炭疽感染を想定して単剤の抗生物質治療が開始された。全身状態の改善が見られ，2剤併用 dual therapy for anthrax (ciprofloxacin and clindamycin) に切り替えられた。
The Texas Department of State Health Services Laboratory performed real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing and culture from the patient's wound swabs. Two wound swabs were positive for _B. anthracis_ DNA by real-time PCR; however, culture did not yield an organism consistent with _B. anthracis_.

2023年6月，まれなタイプの志賀毒素産生大腸菌による重症腸管感染症アウトブレイク an outbreak of severe gastrointestinal symptoms caused by a rare type of Shiga toxin-producing _E. coli_ (STEC, also called enterohemorrhagic _E. coli_, EHEC) が保健当局 the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) により検知された。このアウトブレイクに関係する27例 confirmed cases and 1 probable patient が確認; 居住地はそれぞれ21 sick people lived across England, 3 in Northern Ireland, and 2 [each] in Scotland and Wales であった。
合計24例の感染例 _ E. coli_ O183:H18 cases は，年齢が aged 6 months to 74 years old で，発症日は ranging between May 22 and July 4, 2023 であったと，the journal Microbial Genomics 掲載の論文で報告されている。11例は年齢が0-9歳のグループだった。
情報が得られた24例のうち，17例が血便，8例が病院受診を報告している。1例が溶血性尿毒症症候群 hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) を発症した。アウトブレイクに関連して1例の死亡が発生しているが，感染と死亡との関連は不明とされている。
All 10 cases reported consumption of either beef burgers（ビーフハンバーガー）, ground beef cooked at home（自宅でのひき肉料理）or other ground beef products（他の牛ひき肉食品）。

UK _E. coli_ outbreak most likely linked to food item
