13 Thai Nguyen students hospitalized 'not related to infectious diseases'

One student died, one student was transferred to the National Children's Hospital, and the remaining 11 were treated and monitored at Thai Nguyen Central Hospital.

未承認ワクチンの使用許可
The Secretary of State permitted the use of 3 unauthorised bluetongue serotype 3 (BTV-3) vaccines within the United Kingdom yesterday [4 Sep 2024]. The vaccines are suppressive, meaning they will reduce some of the clinical signs experienced by animals with the disease. They do not prevent infection.
Unlike some of the authorised BTV vaccines for other BTV serotypes the BTV-3 vaccines reduce rather than prevent viraemia (presence of BTV virus in the blood).

Epidemiological comments: The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (Timor-Leste) is located in Southeast Asia and comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Ambeno/Oecusse, an enclave on the north-western side of the island, within Indonesian West Timor. The area is 15 410 km2, administratively divided in 13 municipalities, 65 administrative posts, and 450 villages. The country has a total perimeter of 934 km [580 mi], a 228 km [142 mi] land border with Indonesia (Kupang-West Timor), and the rest of the country is seacoast. Timor-Leste's weather is tropical hot and dry/humid, with distinct seasons: rainy from December to June and dry from July to November. Rainfall is well distributed along the country. There is limited data available on wildlife and companion animals. Evolution of the disease was followed in Oecusse Municipality. There were 22 cases of dog bites; 6 dogs died after biting people and tested positive using Rapid Bionote test. One person died in Oecusse municipality. In coordination with One Health approach the measures were taken to isolate these areas, not bring in and out animals and related items. According to Timor-Leste strategic plan, preventive and control measures are being implemented, including vaccination campaigns in areas of high risk (e.g., Bobonaro, Covalima, Oecusse, and Dili municipalities). A door-to-door rabies vaccination campaign is ongoing and public awareness is raised, particularly in border municipalities. Rabies, a fatal but preventable zoonosis, is a major public health problem in developing countries. In Timor-Leste the disease burden is largely underestimated. Patients with encephalitis following dog bites are rarely hospitalized and die at national hospital in Dili by March 2024. Related to this case, a dog bit a young boy. The dog was killed. Our field team sent samples to Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Dili for testing. RABV rapid Bionote test was positive. Samples were sent for confirmatory testing for rabies to Australian Centre Disease Preparedness (ACDP) in Melbourne-Geelong. Samples sent included: fresh brain x3, fixed brain 2/3x3, swabs x4, fluid x2. Test performed were: _Lyssavirus_ antigen-fluorescent antibody test, _Lyssavirus_ RT-PCR (including rabies), pan-_Lyssavirus_ (N gene) - TaqMan Assay, rabies virus - TaqMan Assay. All confirmatory results were consistently positive for rabies.
