1月7日，英国保健当局 the International Health Regulations (IHR) National Focal Point for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland は WHO に対し，英国内で診断された 2例の広範囲薬剤耐性淋菌感染症患者 cases of extensive drug resistant (XDR) _Neisseria gonorrhoeae_ infection に関する報告を行った。
1例目は2018年10月に英国の性に関する健康サービス sexual health services を受診した，ヘテロセクシャルの女性で，9月にスペイン Ibiza, Spain で英国人男性と性行為 casual sexual contact があったと報告している。Ibiza における性行為のあと受診するまでに抗生物質による治療は受けていない。ceftriaxone 500 mg and azithromycin 1 g による経験的治療が行われ，治癒確認検査 test-of-cure (TOC) で除菌が確認された。
2例目は 2018年11月に sexual health services を受診した女性 a heterosexual female で，2018年6月から9月までの間 スペイン Ibiza, Spain に滞在した英国人男性との性行為を報告している。ceftriaxone 1 g による経験的治療を受けたが除菌されなかった。次いで gentamicin 240 mg (intramuscular) and azithromycin 2 mg (oral) の治療を受けたが症状が改善されないため，3日間 intravenous ertapenem を投与され，その後除菌が確認された。分離された 2株の菌はセフトリアキソンに resistant，アジスロマイシンに intermediate susceptibility を示した。cefixime, penicillin, ciprofloxacin and tetracycline にも resistant だったが，spectinomycin には susceptible だった。これらの分離菌は，2018年3月に報告された症例や2018年4月のオーストラリアから報告された症例からの high-level resistance to azithromycin を示した分離菌とは異なっていた。
