イタリア政府保健省の発表によると，トスカーナ地方 the Tuscany Region の，比較的限定された地域内で発生した患者らから分離された菌は，the ST-11 clonal complex (fine typing C:P1.5-1,10-8:F3-6:ST11) に属していた。他の地域への同一クローンの菌の感染拡大を直ちに感知すべく，全国レベルでのサーベイランス強化が行われている。

培養細胞の実験では，様々な病原ウイルスに対して活性を示し，その中には，Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) coronavirus, Marburg virus, and multiple variants of Ebola virus, including the Makona strain causing the most recent outbreak in Western Africa, も含まれていた。
