27歳男性が，3ヶ月前からの進行性の右の鼻腔の閉塞と出血を訴え，耳鼻科外来を受診した。診察により，赤色，肉芽形成性，有茎性で拍動のない腫瘤 (see Panel A at the source URL above) が鼻腔内を占拠し，接触出血が認められた。患者は付近の池で繰り返し水浴を行っていた。
腫瘤を切除後，基部を焼灼した。病理組織検査で，多厚層性の胞子嚢 ... multiple thick-walled sporangia in various stages of maturation, surrounded by dense inflammation が認められ，リノスポリジウム症 rhinosporidiosis と診断された。
Rhinosporidiosis は水生寄生虫 the aquatic protistan parasite [真菌の 1種 a fungus] _Rhinosporidium seeberi_ 感染による慢性肉芽腫疾患である。赤くて脆い粘膜ポリープが見られ，鼻腔にできることが多く，触れるとかなり出血する。口咽頭，結膜，直腸，外陰に発生することもある。
インド，スリランカに常在するが，アフリカや南米などの世界中の他の地域でも発生が確認されている。8ヶ月間の経過観察後，鼻咽頭腔に再発したため除去した。
