今夏，欧州内のサル痘が減少し始めたとき，研究者らの一番の疑問は，本当なのか？であった。隔離などを怖れて検査を受けなくなったためではないかとの懸念もあった。しかしながら現在，間違いなく減少傾向にある。WHO Europe は，ピーク時の7月には週あたり 2000例が報告していたが，現在は約 100例となっている。the other major epicenter の南北アメリカも，半減以下となり "We're seeing a true decline," と述べられている。ワクチン接種，リスクグループの行動変容が，減少の主な要因と Imperial College London の研究者は述べているが，どの程度影響したかは不明だが，再興の可能性を知る上で重要である。何が患者数を減らしたのかを知ることは，アフリカの endemic countries 以外の地域から根絶にも役立つ。少なくとも英国では，ワクチン接種キャンペーンがある程度寄与した have played a minor role とされている。ワクチンキャンペーンが開始されたのは 7月であったが，6月中旬までに Monkeypox's reproductive number 再生産数が減少し始めていた。他の欧州国でも同様のパターンが見られていた。これは行動変容と，自然感染による免疫による。約半数が性的接触者数を減らしていた。また周知活動により，受診行動と早期治療と，感染期間中の性的接触の回避が増えていた ... 原文参照願います。
