（以前の）外来治療現場の大気サンプリング中のエムポックスウイルス mpox (formerly monkeypox) virus (MPXV) に関する報告を読み，医療従事者のリスク評価のためにさらなるデータの必要性を感じた。2022年8月，英国・ロンドン London, UK の a large sexual health clinic において経時的な環境サンプリング longitudinal surface sampling を行い，M 痘患者が訪れる典型的な外来の環境汚染 environmental contamination を調査した。4週間の観察期間中，合計85人の患者が診察時に採取された検体によりその後 M 痘と診断された。毎週1回，HCW desk, HCW keyboard, patient chair armrest, floor beneath patient chair, desk between patient and HCW, wall next to examination table (approximately where the patient head will be facing during examination), floor beneath examination table, and the door handle to exit the examination room から Copan UTM swabs で採取した検体を，qPCR analysis を用いて解析した。
毎週8検体の4週間分の32検体の結果，only 3 MPXV positive samples が確認され，いずれも閾値に近い値 crossing threshold (Ct) values near the limit of detection for the assay だったことから，occasional low-level contamination であることが示唆された。
