急性腎傷害により66人の小児が死亡した原因が，ガンビアに輸入された，汚染のある咳止めと解熱剤 paracetamol のシロップとほぼ特定されたと，米国 the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention and Gambian scientists の調査で明らかにされた。小児の死亡と医薬品の汚染との関連性がはじめて明らかになったのは2022年12月で，このとき the World Health Organization から，インドの製薬会社 India's Maiden Pharmaceuticals Ltd が製造する4種類の cough syrups の中毒レベル濃度の化学物質 toxic levels of diethylene and ethylene glycol の混入と，市場からの回収を求める注意喚起 an alert が発出された。新たな調査では，2022年6月から9月までの間に，その多くが2歳未満の78人の小児の急性腎傷害が発生し66人が死亡した原因は，トキシンが混入した輸入医薬品であることが "strongly suggests" と報告された。その後4人が死亡し，累計の死者数は70人となった。
Maiden 社はガンビアの死亡例に対する責任を否定しており，インド政府当局も調査時点でシロップへの混入は認めなかったとしている。10月に操業が停止されているが，現在製造再開を模索している。
