英国内の16種のコウモリ bat species found in Britain の便検体のスクリーニングの結果、4 coronaviruses -- including 2 completely new pathogens（まったく新種の病原体）-- が発見されたと、Nature Communications の論文で報告された。このうちの1種類は MERS [Middle East Respiratory Syndrome] に関連しており、もう1種類は COVID-19 の病原ウイルスである SARS-Cov-2 the same sarbecovirus family に属するものであった。
この英国内のコウモリで発見されたコロナウイルスはいずれも、現在までヒトの感染は確認されていないが、リスクはあるため注意深く監視する必要があるとされている。
コウモリには免疫系を抑制する能力があり、すなわち SARS、エボラ、ジカ [?] などの多種多様な致死性のウイルスと共存することが可能であることを意味する。
研究者らは中国南部と東南アジアでは毎年6万6千人以上がコウモリが保有するウイルスに感染すると推定しており、2023年にはミャンマーの研究者らが rural regions の人口の10%以上が過去に SARS-like coronaviruses に感染していたことを発見した。
