Stamford Health's emergency department 救急室に入院するまで、この男性住民 A Stamford resident はロッキー山紅斑熱 Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) についてよく知らなかった。はじめはインフルエンザと考えていたが、死亡する可能性のあるダニによる病気であることがわかった。
2024年2月半ば、42歳のこの患者は微熱と身体の痛みを感じ始め、3－4日のうちに体温が40℃となり、痛みと悪寒がひどくなった。その後、前腕と背中に "spots" が出現し、自身は蚊に刺されたような赤みのあるこぶ clumps of reddish and pinkish mosquito bites だったと述べている。頭痛と発疹がひどくなったためついに救急室を受診し、9日間入院することとなった。入院後の数日間に a flu test, CAT scans, and an ultrasound などの数多くの検査を受けたがすべて異常なく、医師が診断や治療法を見つけられたなかったらどうしようかと心配になった。5日目頃にようやく Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), an illness caused by the bacterium _Rickettsia rickettsii_ と診断された。
コネチカット Connecticut 州において、RMSF はダニの刺咬 the bite of an infected American dog tick によって起きるが、年平均数例程度 just several cases a year であると、州保健当局 the Connecticut Department of Public Health から説明されている。
