7月5日にルームメイトがジフテリアで死亡したことを聞き、2人はのどの痛みのための薬を薬局で購入した。2日後、1人がジフテリア検査で陽性となり治療のため the Hanoi-based National Hospital for Tropical Diseases に入院となり、もう1人も隔離されている。

Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT、ヒト・アフリカトリパノソーマ症) は寄生虫が原因で、ツェツェバエの刺咬 the bite of the tsetse fly により感染が伝播される。数ヶ月から数年かけて進行し、初期症状はインフルエンザ様症状であるが、次第に中枢神経系に波及する。HAT により行動変容 behavior changes や睡眠障害 disrupt sleep をきっかけに、攻撃性などの症状が引き起こされる triggering aggression and other symptoms。治療されないままだとほぼすべてが死に至る。ワクチンはなく、ツェツェバエの駆除と刺咬回避の努力が絶え間なく行われてきた。
原因となる寄生虫の種類による2つの病型があり：
The gambiense form が up about 92% of cases と最も多く、トーゴ、ベニン、コートジボワール、ウガンダ、赤道ギニア、ガーナ、チャドで排除された。
The other variant, the rhodesiense form はルワンダでは排除されている。
かつてはずっとまれな疾患で、1964年にアフリカ地域内で報告されたのは4435例であったが、20世紀後半にアフリカの新興国の内戦や政情不安とともに再興し、1998年までに the WHO に毎年 3万7991 new cases per year が報告されるようになった。

MGAP DILAVE teams detect case of animal rabies in Salto
5日、獣医学研究所 The Veterinary Laboratories Directorate (DILAVE) of the MGAP において、the city of Salto 市内のネコの狂犬病感染例 a positive case of rabies in a cat が確認された。この飼いネコは、いきなり攻撃的となり an acute change in behavior characterized by aggressiveness 突然死した。ウルグアイでは、1966年以降ヒトの狂犬病患者は記録されておらず、ネコの感染例が最後に報告されたのは1983年であるが、コウモリ hematophagous and insectivorous bats の間ではウイルスの活動性が続いていることから、他の動物やヒトへの感染伝播リスクが続いていることが示唆されている。
This recent discovery marks the 1st confirmation of a species jump [cross-species infection] in the country, underlining the importance of properly managing this situation.
Measures and recommendations for the population
- Report any animal suspected of having rabies (biters, sudden death or nervous symptoms without a clear diagnosis).
- Vaccinate dogs and cats annually with rabies vaccine from 3 months of age.
- Consult a doctor immediately in case of an animal bite, informing the doctor whether the biting animal is a dog or a cat and whether it can be observed within 10 days after the bite.
