南部の都市 (of Madrid マドリッド) でリーシュマニア症 The outbreak of leishmaniasis が発生しており、2012年には 150例が報告されるなど、勢いは衰えていない。 the "Report on the Health Status of the Population of Madrid, 2012," では、この流行で過去 3年間で約 500例が報告されており、昨年 [2012] 確認された患者が the 150 cases であったことが明らかにされている。患者は the green zones of Bosquesur 周辺の、Fuenlabrada, Leganes, Getafe or Humanes で発生していた。リーシュマニア症は昆虫 (感染動物を刺咬したサンドフライ a _Phlebotominae_ female sand fly) の刺咬により感染するもので、内臓に感染が及んで治療が行われない場合は死亡することもある。大きな変化があったのは 2009年で、それまで年間 15－25例程度であった報告数が、471例に急増した。患者は southern Madrid (Fuenlabrada with 322 cases, Leganes with 37, Getafe with 20 affected, and Humanes, which had 5 patients) で発生しており、いずれも the green area of Bosquesur に近いことから、この地域が感染発生源と考えられ、Bosquesur で増えたウサギ hares and rabbits が保有宿主 reservoirs or carriers of the parasite とみられている。皮膚型と、脾臓や肝臓に感染が波及し死亡することもある内蔵型の 2種類の病型が知られている。2012年に Fuenlabrada が an "Emergency Area" に指定され、ウサギの駆除が許可された。 2011年に 47例であった内臓リーシュマニア症患者が、2012年には 3例に減少し、一定の効果が見られた。しかし、感染流行は続いており、2013年にも新たに 3例が報告されている。
