JAMA Neurology 掲載の新たな研究で，エボラウイルス疾患の生存患者から採取の脳脊髄液について行われた，中枢神経系内のウイルス残存 potential Ebola virus persistence の検査結果が報告された。the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke of the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md. の研究者らは，7 EVD survivors (2 women and 5 men; average age 35) in the PREVAIL study の患者らの脳脊髄液検体 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples in 2015 について，Ebola viral RNA の解析を行ったところ，7検体のいずれからもウイルス遺伝子は確認されなかった。
"(ウイルス遺伝子は確認されなかったが) 急性期から髄液採取のための腰椎穿刺の実施までの時間経過が比較的長かったことが影響している可能性がある"と述べられている。
一方，エボラウイルスが生存患者の中枢神経系内で休眠 dormant し，細胞内に潜伏 cell associated していたとしても，髄液内に放出されないのかもしれない，とも述べている。さらに，もしウイルスの貯蔵部位から髄液内へのウイルスの放出があれば，急性髄膜脳炎を起こす可能性がある，とも述べられている。

Because reagents for testing were absent, testing of those frozen samples was carried out [on 17 Jul 2017]. 21 donkeys were tested for piroplasmosis, 17 of them were positive for _Theileria equi_, 55 horses were tested, 15 of them were positive for _ Babesia caballi_, all 55 of them positive for _Theileria equi_. [On 6 Jun 2017] next sampling was carried out. These samples were also tested on [17 Jul 2017]. 1 of 85 samples of donkeys was tested positive for _Babesia caballi_, and 15 samples were positive for _Theileria equi_. 9 out of 58 samples of horses were positive for _Babesia caballi_, and all 58 samples were positive for _Theileria equi_.
