2019年3月1-13日にメキシコ Mexico (Chiapas region) を訪れた，イタリアの洞窟研究者 a group of Italian speleologists [cave scientists] の間のヒストプラズマ症例 several cases of highly suspected histoplasmosis について調査を行っている。全員が La Cueva del Rio La Venta 内で計 4夜 [from 4-8 Mar 2019] を過ごした。コウモリおよびその排泄物が，全長約 12kmにおよぶ洞窟の出入り口で確認されている。18人中 9人が，帰国後 5-7日目より急性肺ヒストプラズマ症 acute pulmonary histoplasmosis に典型的な症状 (発熱，息切れ，乾性咳嗽，疲労，頭痛）を呈している。6人の患者で高解像度 CT 所見として多発性肺腫瘤が確認され，より症状の重い 2人が当科に入院となった。症状および肺病変があることから，血清学的検査のための採血を行ない，イトラコナゾール itraconazole を用いて治療を開始した
