19歳ドイツ人女性が，ザンビア滞在中に東アフリカトリパノソーマ症 East African trypanosomiasis (due to _Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense_) に罹患したと診断された。a school project のため，2018年8月から Kabwe 近郊で勤務していた。From 29 May to 4 Jun [2019] に，South Luangwa National Park を訪れていた。5月31日，Kafunta River Lodge からのドライブ an afternoon game-viewing drive 中に，ふくらはぎに軽い痛みのある虫刺され a mildly painful insect bite を経験した。ドライブ中に多数のツェツェバエ tsetse flies がいたのは記憶しているが，この地域では数年以上トリパノソーマ症患者は発生していないと説明されていた。虫刺されはすぐによくなったので，Kabwe に戻った。6月11日夕方に高熱，悪寒，激しい頭痛に襲われた。ふくらはぎの虫に刺された場所が膨れ，変色していた livid discoloration。複数回のマラリアの迅速検査は陰性だった。現地で抗生物質の治療が行われたが効果はなく，6月16日にLusaka Coptic Hospital に入院し，血液塗抹検査で African trypanosomiasis と診断された。髄液検査で中枢神経系への波及は否定され，17日から suramin による治療が開始され，7月2日に安定した状態でドイツに帰国し，further treatment and follow-up at our institution を求めた。South Luangwa National Park は，endemic for East African trypanosomiasis with several cases in recent years として知られている; the most recent report in ProMED-mail is in March 2019: 20190320.6377064

2019年，ラパスの病院 a hospital in La Paz [department], Bolivia における，ボリビア出血熱の小集積 a small outbreak of Bolivian hemorrhagic fever が報告された。
Bolivian hemorrhagic fever (BHF) は Machupo virus (Arenaviridae, Tacaribe complex, _Mammarenavirus_) の感染症で，1959年に初めて a sporadic hemorrhagic illness in rural areas of Beni department, eastern Bolivia として報告され，ウイルスそのものが特定されたのは 1963年のことであった。
during April to July in the upper savanna region of Beni にもっとも多く発生し、基本的に endemic areas において家屋内に侵入するげっ歯類を介し through rodents ([the large vesper mouse] _Calomys callosus_) ウイルスに暴露する。南北アメリカで報告されている，ヒトのアレナウイルス感染症の 1つである。_C. callosus_ はウイルスに感染しても無症状で，唾液，尿，糞便にウイルスを排出する。感染実験では 50% が慢性ウイルス血症となり，their bodily excretions or secretions 内にウイルスが排出される。おとなになってからの感染では免疫が成立しウイルスを排出しなくなることもある。
the infectious dose of Machupo virus in humans is unknown であるが，ヒトは，感染のあるげっ歯類の aerosolized secretions or excretions を吸入したり，汚染された食品を嚥下することで感染する可能性があるほか，傷のある皮膚や口腔咽頭粘膜から直接感染する可能性もある。院内感染，ヒト－ヒト感染も報告されている ...
致死率は from 5% to 30% とされている。
複数の症例でリバビリン Ribavirin による治療が有効だった。推奨される成人に対する投与量は 2.0 g intravenously (IV), followed by 1.0 g IV every 6 hours for 4 days, and then 0.5 g every 8 hours for 6 days とされている。
Argentine hemorrhagic fever (AHF、アルゼンチン出血熱) と the etiologic agent and clinical features が類似している。AHF では神経学的症状がより多く見られる，一方，出血症状は more common in BHF である。AHF に対するワクチンが利用可能であり，理論的には BHF に対しても有効である可能性がある。
