生来健康であった 18か月の女児が，6月のオランダの滞在中の左肩のダニ刺咬後に，リンパ節腫脹と発熱を発症した。ダニは翌日完全に除去されたが，2日後に発熱と発疹がみられた。ダニ刺咬から約 30日後の 7月15日まで何も症状が見られなかったが，鎖骨上に腫脹が現れた。はじめは皮膚に異常は見られなかったが，徐々に増大し皮膚は充血した。さらに 3日後に左腋窩の腫脹も出現した。イタリアには一時的な滞在であったため，フィレンツェの病院 the Meyer Children's University Hospital in Florence への入院となった。Meyer Children's Hospital と Careggi Hospital in Florence で実施された血清学的検査 Serology test for tularemia はいずれも陽性結果となり，the Microbiology Laboratory of the National Institute for Infectious Diseases "L. Spallanzani" in Rome での分子生物学的検査で，野兎病菌の存在 the presence of _Francisella tularensis_ in surgical drainage が確認された。Further microbiological and molecular investigations are ongoing.
