リスボンなど Lisbon and the Alentejo を含むポルトガル中央部 the centre of Portugal の 9つの地域 districts から，ヒツジのブルータングウイルス the bluetongue virus 感染が報告されている。昆虫が媒介する非伝染性疾患で，感染した動物は 1週間以内に死亡することもある。法律により，地域の農家は家畜にワクチンを接種することが義務づけられているため，アウトブレイクは速やかに終息すると考えられる。
これまでに感染が確認されているのは，Castelo Branco (all boroughs), Coimbra (Arganil, Oliveira do Hospital, and Tábua), Guarda (Gouveia, Fornos de Algodres, Seia), Viseu (Carregal do Sal, Castro Daire, Seia, Nelas, Tondela, and Viseu), and Santarém (all boroughs).
