以前に天然痘ワクチンを接種している成人や高齢者のほとんどは，残念ながらサル痘に対する保護はないと，the Department of Medical Sciences は警告している。若い頃に天然痘ワクチンを受けた現在 40歳以上の人々について検査したところ，接種歴によるサル痘に対する免疫は認められなかった ... 過去に天然痘ワクチンを受けたことのある 45歳から74歳の 30人の血清を用いて a plaque reduction neutralization test を行ったところ，サル痘ウイルスに対する感染防護効果は minimal at best だった。28人にはサル痘に対する免疫は認められず，1人は immunity level against the disease's A.2 variant を維持しており，もう 1人は against both B.1 and A.2 variants（に対する免疫が）が認められたが，全体としてタイの高齢者のほとんどはサル痘に対する有意な免疫はないと結論づけた，と述べられている。

遺伝学的に関連性のある，ワクチン由来の 2型ポリオウイルス vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (VDPV2) が 3つの国の環境中で検出され，1例の麻痺性ポリオ患者が発生している。ポリオウイルスのリスクがない国は存在せず，全世界から根絶されない限り，すべての地域にとってポリオは脅威であり続ける。この問題は，最近になって英国，米国，イスラエルなどの，ポリオフリーとされていた国々でポリオウイルスが検出されたことで改めて浮上している。

英国では 2022年6月，2月から5月までの間に採取されたロンドン north and east London の複数の下水サンプルで VDPV2 が検出された ...

米国でも 2022年7月，サーベイランスが行われた結果，ニューヨーク州保健当局 the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) から，the area of Rockland County の，ワクチン未接種であった麻痺性ポリオ患者 a case of paralytic poliomyelitis が報告された。the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention の初期の解析で VDPV2 と確認され，その後 7月29日に，この患者から分離されたウイルスが，これ以前にロンドンの VDPV2 や，6月にニューヨーク New York とエルサレム Greater Jerusalem の環境サンプルで確認されていたウイルス 2 Sabin-like type 2 isolates とも遺伝学的に関連性があることが，the Global Polio Eradication Initiative により確かめられた。New York の麻痺性ポリオ症例の便検体（中のウイルス）は，a VP1（領域）sequence に 10箇所の Sabin 2 からの変異を有し，ニューヨークの下水中のウイルスの塩基配列と遺伝学的関連性があり (99.34% identity), イスラエル，米国，英国で分離されたウイルスの全カプシド塩基配列（解析）complete capsid sequences により，共通の祖先から出たと考えられる evidence of shared genetic ancestry (>99.0% identity) と，The Global Polio Laboratory Network は報告している ... 感染伝播が起きている地域において唯一信頼性のある（ワクチンである）経口ポリオワクチンの使用を終えるには，ポリオ根絶が必須であり，患者を発生させる前に強力な環境サーベイランスでウイルスを検出することが重要 ...
