腺疫 strangles を発病したウマを飼育していた70歳の女性がこの病気に感染したと、ワシントン大学 the University of Washington School of Medicine の研究者らが報告した。ウマにとって腺疫は感染力の強い病気であるが、ヒトの感染は極めてまれで、多量の病原体を含んだ分泌物に暴露した場合に起こる可能性がある。この女性は、嘔気 nausea, dry heaves、発熱、悪寒、振せんの症状で救急室を受診し、同時に激しい咳嗽を伴っていたが息切れは認められなかった。最近の病気、免疫を低下させる病態、常用薬などはなかった。
（診察・検査所見）Cracking sounds could be heard in her lungs, and a CT scan showed patchy, ground-glass opacities that might indicate partial lung collapse or an atypical infection.
入院し抗生物質の静脈注射が開始され、早期の敗血症と肺炎と診断された。入院治療開始の翌日から、血圧、心拍数、呼吸数、体温がもとに戻った。
血液の検査 A PCR test で連鎖球菌 _Streptococcus_ が確認されたため引き続き入院するよう勧められた。入院の6日前に飼育するウマが呼吸困難であることに気づき、翌日に口や鼻から出血して死亡した。死亡する際に女性はこの馬を抱きしめていた hold。
Researchers said this was the most likely cause of the horse-to-human transmission of the disease, though this cannot be absolutely confirmed.
