"The confirmed cases of West Nile virus (WNV) infection in humans in Italy have risen to 94 since the beginning of May [2023] (55 in the previous bulletin)," [according to the weekly bulletin of the ISS (Istituto Superiore di Sanità]. Of these, 52 occurred in the neuro-invasive form (9 Piedmont, 12 Lombardy, 6 Veneto, 23 Emilia-Romagna, 1 Puglia [Apulia], and 1 case imported from Hungary); 26 cases identified in blood donors (4 Piedmont, 17 Lombardy, 1 Veneto, 4 Emilia-Romagna) and 16 cases of fever (2 Piedmont, 5 Lombardy, 7 Veneto, 1 Emilia-Romagna, 1 Sardinia). Of the confirmed cases, 3 deaths were reported (2 Lombardy, 1 Emilia-Romagna). The 1st human case of WNV infection of the season was reported from Emilia-Romagna in July [2023] in the province of Parma.
The provinces with proven circulation of WNV belonging to 8 regions have risen to 41: Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Emilia-Romagna, Puglia, Sicily, and Sardinia." ...

A survey report released by the Forest Department in 2023 reveals that approximately 40% of reported wild elephant deaths in Kerala consist of calves. As per data, around 735 elephants died between 2015 and 2022 in the state. Of these, 275 were under the age of 10 while 155 were between 10 and 20 years. According to the survey, the rise in death rate of calves is due to herpesvirus (EEHV、象ヘルペスウイルス), a virus which can cause a highly fatal hemorrhagic disease when transmitted to young Asian elephants. No cure has been found for the infection so far.
