ビブリオ菌 _Vibrio mimicus_ は、その菌名はコレラ菌 _V. cholerae_ に代謝および遺伝情報が似ていることに由来するが、世界中で食中毒や水系下痢疾患の原因として知られている。少ないデータではあるが、発生頻度 _V. mimicus_ incidence として、_V. parahaemolyticus_ and non-O1/non-O139 _V. cholerae_ より報告が少なく、_V. fluvialis_ と同程度とされている。一部 some _V. mimicus_ strains がトキシン cholera toxin (CTX) or a cholera-like toxin を産生したり、the ctx complex の遺伝子を有するが、ほとんどの場合これらを欠いている。しかしながら同菌は、重症のコレラ様疾患の原因となり、2014年に the CDC に報告された患者のうち57%が入院した。
