治療薬の極端な不足に伴う疥癬の感染増加 A rise in scabies cases が公衆衛生上の問題となっていると，医師らが指摘している。2023年，主な治療薬が不足する中，アウトブレイクが3倍に増えた。英国においても増加が認められており，皮膚科医が今週，治療が遅れることで感染が拡大すると警告している。Between 1 Jan and 5 Dec [2023] の期間中に27件のアウトブレイクが発生した。2022年は9件，2021年は4件だった。12月の最新のアウトブレイクでは，南東部の a nursing home で5人が感染した。
The usual treatment for scabies is 2 applications of permethrin（ペルメトリン）or （マラチオン）as a 2nd‐line treatment, applied one week apart, with simultaneous treatment of close contacts.
しかし，permethrin is currently unavailable in its proprietary and generic forms, according to Dr Walley.
Malathion, sold under the Derbac trade name, is on the Health Products Regulatory Authority's medicine shortage list as being unavailable, with an expected return date of 31 Jan 2024. 何年間も入手不可能となっている。
A 3rd option, benzyl benzoate, can be used when the 2 other treatments are unavailable, but Dr Walley pointed out that this is not funded for medical card holders.
