... 2023年12月19日に the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) が、アルゼンチンとウルグアイ国内のウマの間の西部ウマ脳炎発生に関する注意喚起 an alert regarding the risk to human health associated with the circulation of the WEE virus in equines in Argentina and Uruguay を行い、As of 19 Dec 2023, 921 cases had been confirmed in equines (920 in Argentina and one case in Uruguay) が確認されていた。
その後、同12月20日にアルゼンチン国内でヒトの感染例 a human case of the disease が確定診断され、on 30 Jan 2024, a human case was confirmed in Uruguay (ウルグアイ)。アルゼンチンで最後に human cases of WEE が報告されたのは in 1982-1983 and in 1996 であり、ウルグアイで最後にヒトの感染例が報告されたのは2009年のことである。
2023年11月以降、アルゼンチンとウルグアイのウマとヒトの感染例の増加が続いており、さらにウルグアイとアルゼンチンと国境を接するブラジル Brazil, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul においてもウマの感染例が確認されている。
as of 14 Feb 2024 the date of the elaboration of this risk assessment において、2464 outbreaks in animals (1445 in 16 provinces of Argentina, 1018 in 16 departments of Uruguay, and one case in a Brazilian state) と ヒトの感染例 73 confirmed cases in humans (69 in Argentina and 4 in Uruguay) が報告されている。
