In 2021, a nationwide prevalence survey conducted in Senegal among the general population found that 19 (0.24%) of the 7918 blood samples tested were IgM positive for West Nile virus. Additionally, WNV was detected in 41 (0.31%) of 13 009 mosquito pools. WNV strains isolated were all from the _Culex_ genus, particularly _Cx. neavei_, _Cx. poicilipes_, _Cx. antennatus_, and _Cx. tritaeniorhynchus_.
