Itch mites: Cicada double brood brings parasite outbreak to Illinois
小型で強い痒みの（原因となる）ダニがイリノイ州全域 across the state of Illinois に拡がっている。221年に1度の素数ゼミの大発生後に残された卵を、多数のこの微少クモ類 the microscopic arachnids が貪っているためである。セミはすでに死滅したが、その卵に付いた oak leaf itch mites により、地域全体で発疹が発生している。The mites の体長は0.5mm未満で目には見えず、吸血することもないが、皮膚の表層に唾液を注入し、炎症反応が起こり、周囲に発赤を伴う小水疱が主に上半身に発生する。
The phenomenon of itch mite outbreaks in the USA は初めてのことではなく、2004年にはじめて1万9000例以上 in Kansas alone が報告された。その後、other states, including Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Texas に拡大した。
その後の調査で、the mites は the larvae of oak gall midges を餌とすることが判明し、oak leaf itch mite -- a type of fly that lays eggs on oak trees と命名された。

Epidemiologic data
A total of 51 people infected with one of the outbreak strains of _Salmonella_ has been reported from 21 states (see map [for map and timeline, see original URL - Mod.LL]). Of these reported illnesses, 38 people were infected with the _Salmonella_ Stanley strain, and 13 people with the _Salmonella_ Poona strain. Illnesses started on dates ranging from 20 Aug 2023 to 9 Jul 2024 (see timeline).
Demographics information

The Poona Outbreak has higher proportions of children (46% are children one year or younger) and people who identified as Hispanic (67%).
State and local public health officials are interviewing people about the animals they came into contact with the week before they got sick. Of the 41 people interviewed, 27 (66%) reported contact with pet turtles. Of the 23 people who reported the size of the pet turtle, 21 (91%) reported contact with pet turtles with shells less than 4 in [10 cm] long.

Single human case of swine flu in Saskatchewan in July [2024]

Two outbreaks of bluetongue detected near Thionville, 176 animals affected in Luxembourg
Moselle is officially affected by bluetongue while the vaccination campaign is intensifying in Luxembourg.
Two outbreaks of bluetongue serotype 3 have been confirmed near Thionville [France], the Moselle prefecture announced on Thursday [15 Aug 2024], while "several farms" with animals showing clinical signs suggestive of this disease have been placed under surveillance in the department.
These 2 outbreaks of BT of this new serotype were confirmed by the national reference laboratory (ANSES) in 2 sheep farms in the Thionville district on 8 Aug 2024, announced the prefect of Moselle in a press release.
