エボラウイルス Ebola virus (EBOV) and マールブルグウイルス Marburg virus (MARV) はフィロウイルス科 Filoviridae に属し、ヒトおよびヒト以外の霊長類の深刻な出血熱の原因となっている。フィリピンでは、ヒト以外の霊長類と家畜のブタに EBOV (Reston virus) が存在し、血清学的調査ではヒトとフルーツコウモリ fruit bats の感染が示唆されているが、アジアにおけるウイルスの保有宿主や増幅宿主についての情報は少ない。
今回、the period from December 2005 - December 2006 に採取された、353 頭の健康なオランウータン Bornean orangutans (_Pongo pygmaeus_) in Kalimantan Island, Indonesia の血液検体について、特異 IgG 抗体 (filovirus-specific IgG antibodies using a highly sensitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with recombinant viral surface glycoprotein (GP) antigens derived from multiple species of filoviruses (5 EBOV and 1 MARV species)) が調べられた。
検体中 18.4 per cent (65/353) and 1.7 per cent (6/353) が抗体陽性 seropositive for EBOV and MARV, respectively で、EBOV and MARV antigens の間の交差反応はほとんど見られなかった。陽性検体では、immunoblotting により、IgG antibodies to viral internal proteins も確認された。
Asian filovirus の1つと考えられる Reston virus の特異性が最も高かったのはわずか 1.4% (5/353) of the serum samples であったのに対し、大多数の陽性検体 the majority of EBOV-positive sera は、いずれもアフリカだけで確認されている Zaire, Sudan, Cote d'Ivoire, or Bundibugyo viruses に特異性を示した。
これらの結果より、インドネシアには未知のウイルスを含む種々のフィロウイルスや類縁のウイルスが存在し、一部は血清学的に African EBOVs に相同性を有し、特定されていない保有宿主からオランウータンの集団内へと感染伝播されていることが示唆された
