[13 Jan 2014] 香港 Hong Kong の男性1名が、鳥インフルエンザ the deadly H7N9 bird flu [avian influenza] 感染のため、診断から1週間足らずのうちに死亡した。この65歳の男性は、香港で2人目の同ウイルス感染による死者であり、感染が報告されているのは3人である。調査の結果、発症の1週間前の1日から2日にかけて、隣接する中国本土の深セン市 Lowu の親類を訪れていたことがわかった。直接生きたトリ（家禽）とは接触していなかったが、同市郊外の生きたトリを売る市場 a wet market の近くを通った際にウイルスに感染したものと香港当局は見ている。治療従事者らを含む濃厚接触者の健康監視が行われている。昨年 [26 Dec 2013]、香港では初めてとなる Boxing Day の80歳の男性1名の H7N9 感染による死亡が発生した。12月初旬に報告された第1例目の36歳のインドネシア人男性ホームヘルパーの感染に続く、2例目の患者だった。

Wildlife in Need of Care のボランティアが先週 [week of 6 Jan 2014]、金網にかかっているところを救出し獣医師に診せたところ感染が疑われ、剖検で感染が確定した。Australian bat lyssavirus は致死性で、コウモリの神経系を冒す。bats and flying foxes のおよそ 1%が感染していると考えられている。咬まれたり引っかかれたりした傷からコウモリの唾液が体内に侵入することで、ヒトやその他の動物にもウイルス感染が拡がる可能性がある。
過去 2年間に NSW で確認された Australian bat lyssavirus は 5例で、このうち 3例が the Hunter 地方からの報告であった。the Hunter New England health area では 11月 [2013] に 2週間で 10人がコウモリによる咬傷やひっかき傷の治療を受けている。
過去 12年間に、3人のオーストラリア人が、 Australian bat lyssavirus [infection] により死亡している。
