ベネズエラ出血熱 Venezuela hemorrhagic fever [VHF] は依然として国内で endemic であり，その地理的分布を拡げつつある。
保健省 The Ministry of Health が 15日，米州保健機関 the Panamerican Health Organization に対し，2016年に 142 suspected cases が発生したと報告した。このうち 126人が Barinas state で発生し，21人が死亡し，確定診断された症例は 7例のみであった。Portuguesa [state] でも 16 patients, of which 5 died が報告されたが，確定診断例は 3例だった。
1989年に初めて a total of 5 epidemic outbreaks が報告され，ネズミの排泄物 cane rat excreta との直接の接触や吸入が原因となる。高熱，筋肉痛，咽頭痛，食欲不振，下痢，嘔吐，咳嗽などの症状が見られる。第7ないし8病日目に出血症状が現れ，続いて多臓器不全や時にけいれんが起こる。2016年のアウトブレイクは，2002年に次いで深刻だった。2017年も新たな流行の発生が予想されている。ベネズエラだけで発生が確認されているこの疾患の，これまでで最も発生が多かった発生地域は，Portuguesa state in the municipalities of Guanarito, Papelón and San Genaro である。Barinas では Sosa municipality and western Guárico だけに限定されていた。2015年以降，other municipalities in Barinas にも拡大し，はじめて，Portuguesa state を超える発生数となった。この変化は，げっ歯類の個体数の季節性の変動や，農村部での農地拡大によるヒトとげっ歯類の接触機会の増加により説明できるとされている。ワクチンや治療薬はなく，支持療法にとどまる。6月30日，公衆保健団体 the Venezuelan Society of Public Health and the Network が初めて報告した the 1st bulletin announcing the outbreak の中で，Barinas で初めて確認され，デング出血熱との鑑別が困難 confused with DHF であったと述べられている。短時間に，複数の若年成人と，小児，妊婦，高齢者各 1人が死亡し，このうち 5人は同じ家族だったと報告されている ...
