2018年11月22日，the World Health Organization に，ナイジェリア Edo State , Nigeria における，死亡例を含む黄熱が疑われる患者の小集積 a cluster of suspected yellow fever (YF) cases が報告された。Edo State はラゴス Lagos から 400km 足らずの位置にあり，ラゴスと南東部との間の頻繁なヒトの移動の要衝 a dense population movement axis となっている。またラッサ熱 Lassa fever の常在地域であることも知られており，当初はラッサ熱が原因と疑われていた。9月22日から12月31日までの間に合計 146 suspected, 42 presumptive positive, and 32 confirmed cases, including 26 deaths (致死率: 18 percent) が，across 15 of 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Edo State (figure 1) の地域から報告されている。患者 122例から採取された血液検体が，診断のため検査機関に送付; 国内の IgM serology 検査では 42 (34 percent) samples が presumptive positive と判断され，確認のため，the regional reference laboratory, Institut Pasteur de Dakar (IPD) に送付された。plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) or real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) による確認検査で，このうち 32検体 (76 percent) が確定診断された。男性患者が大部分(108 of 146, 74 percent) を占め，最も多い年齢層は 10-19 years with 48 cases (33 percent), followed by the age group 20-29 with 36 cases (25 percent) だった。初期には発生地域 the affected LGAs が農村部に限られていたが，11月末以降，都市部 (3 urban LGAs) からも疑い例が報告されるようになり，150万都市である州都ベニン Benin City のある Oredo LGA からも 2 presumptive positive and one confirmed case が報告されている。アウトブレイク発生時の Edo State のワクチン接種率はきわめて低く (データによると，2018年は 50%以下) ，a 7-day YF Reactive Vaccination Campaign implementation in 13 LGAs の実施がようやく決まったところである。昆虫学的調査では，都市環境でアルボウイルスの急速な増殖に与るネッタイシマカ _Aedes aegypti_ などのベクターの増加が確認されている ...
2017年9月に患者 a confirmed case of YF in Kwara State が確認されて以降，ナイジェリア政府は継続的に黄熱対策を行っており，2017年9月から 2018年12月30日までの間に，237 specimens が検査で陽性 IgM positive in-country となり; 82 cases (including 13 deaths) が確定診断された confirmed by IPD; 27 LGAs in 14 States から患者の報告があり，6州の selected LGAs が response campaigns キャンペーンの対象となった。
Edo State で現在発生中のアウトブレイクは異例の規模と重症度 unusual in scale and severity で起きており，発生時期・場所のいずれでも，患者数がきわめて多い。12月から 1月にかけて州間や海外からの旅行者が増える時期に重なり，さらなる感染拡大が懸念される。

2018年10月，遺伝学的関連性のある複数のワクチン由来の 2型ポリオウイルス genetically-linked circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) isolates が，Haut-Katanga province (Mufunga-Sampwe district ) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo の 2例のポリオ感染例から分離された。The 1st case は 10月6日に急性弛緩性麻痺 acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) を発症した 11歳児。The 2nd case は 10月7日に発症した 生後 29-month old child で，the 1st case との接触が確認されている。分離されたウイルスは a new emergence で過去に同国内で確認されている cVDPV2s との関連性はなかった。同国内においては，2017年6月以降，the 4th distinct outbreak of cVDPV2 となる。2017年6月以来，合計 42 cVDPV2 cases が確認されており，このうち 20 cases が 2018年に発生した。
