2022年7月以降，ドイツ国内への移民の間で毒素産生性ジフテリアの輸入感染例 cases of imported diphtheria with toxigenic _Corynebacterium diphtheriae_ が急増している。Up to 30 Sep 2022, the national public health institute に 44例が報告され，すべてが検査で確定診断されており，シリア（21例）とアフガニスタン（17例）からの男性の移民だった。情報 Phylogeny and available journey information から，ほとんどの症例（19例）が along the Balkan route 上で感染していた。
Active case finding, increased laboratory preparedness and epicentre localisation in countries along this route are important.
