アルクトゥルス arcturus と命名された新たなコロナウイルス株により，インドで COVID-19 cases が増加し，ふたたびワクチン生産が再開され，英国ほかの地域での感染増につながることが懸念されている。4月14日，インドで新たに1万1109例の感染が確認された。The XBB.1.16 strain, a sub-variant of omicron は，シンガポール，英国，オーストラリア，米国など世界22か国で確認されている。the last major sub-variant に比べ感染力が1.2倍であることが示されている。2023年1月後半にインドで初めて確認されたこのウイルス株について専門家は，小児において特異的な症状があることへの懸念を示しており，その1つが結膜炎 conjunctivitis である。多彩な症状として，高熱，咳，とかゆみのある結膜炎が含まれると，小児科医 a paediatrician and former head of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Immunisation が説明している。

COVID-19 infection が胎盤を通過して胎児に感染し，新生児の脳障害の原因になったと研究者らが報告した。The University of Miami study により，2020年にデルタ株検査で陽性となった若い母親が出産した2例の新生児が，けいれんを発症し重篤な発達障害を来したことを確認された。1例は生後13か月で死亡し，もう1例は a hospice care unit に入所している。

同報告によると，いずれの児も出生時の COVID-19 検査は陰性であったが，血中の抗体価が高値であった。このことから，胎盤を通じて母体から胎児にウイルスが移行したことが示唆されると研究者は説明しており，いずれの母親の胎盤においてもウイルスが確認されている。死亡した児の脳の剖検でもコロナウイルスの痕跡が確認されており，ウイルス感染が脳障害の原因であったことが示唆されると説明されている。母親の1人は検査陽性であったが軽症で満期まで妊娠を継続していたが，もう1人は重症化したため医師の判断により8週間早い急速遂娩となっている。デルタ株に限られた状況なのか，オミクロンでも起こりうるかは明らかにされていない。

産科医は，今回のような事例はまれであるが，妊娠中に感染があった場合は，小児科医に情報を伝えて発達遅延の評価を受けるよう促している。これまで経胎盤感染の可能性が指摘されていたが，直接的に証明されたことはなかった。
