オーストラリア在住の英国人女性の脳内から、主にヘビが保有する 8cm の生きたままで動く寄生虫が摘出され、世界で初めての患者となった。この64歳の女性が感染していたのは Ophidascaris robertsi_ と呼ばれる、a Twix chocolate bar の長さにまで成長する線虫の1種 a species of roundworm で、通常はオーストラリアの the Australian state of New South Wales に生息するニシキヘビの消化管内 the gastrointestinal tract of carpet pythons にしかみられない。医療関係者は、ヘビの排泄物が付いた食用の草を食べたときに、気づかずに虫卵も摂取したのではないかと考えている。女性の体内で孵化したあと、幼虫が脳に達したもので、おそらく女性が服用していた免疫抑制剤が関与したものと考えられている。
2021年1月、3週間続く腹痛、下痢、乾性咳嗽、夜間発汗の症状のため Canberra の病院に入院したが、各種の感染症検査で診断がつかないまま、最終的に原因不明の肺炎の診断でステロイド治療が開始された。当初改善がみられたが、発熱と咳嗽が持続するため数週間後に再入院となった。医師らは、T細胞誘導性好酸球増多症候群 T-cell driven hypereosinophilic syndrome を疑い、免疫抑制剤を投与した。
しかし2022年1月、女性に健忘症とうつ症状の悪化が見られたことから、女性の脳が調べられることになった。
画像診断で女性の脳内の病変が確認され、同年6月に外科手術が行われた。術中、病変内の a peculiar "string-like structure" に気づかれ、驚いたことに蠢き始めた。検査により、通常はヘビが保有する寄生虫であることが確認され、the 1st documented case of human infection となった。このほかには体内に虫が存在しないことが確認され、健忘症とうつ症状は、術後6か月で改善したが残っている。ラットの実験では体内で虫卵が4年以上生存する可能性があるとして、継続的にモニターする重要性が強調されている。正確な感染経路は不明確ではあるが、この症例報告の著者らは、普段から野草を摘む女性の習慣 woman's habit of collecting native vegetation が原因ではないかとしている。植物から直接的に、あるいは手や調理器具の汚染を介し間接的に、気づかないまま虫卵を嚥下していたとの仮説が示されている。
