香港の下水 Hong Kong's sewage waters で、新しい変異株 A new COVID-19 variant が確認されたと、保健当局 health authorities が明らかにした。The Centre for Health Protection によると、the KP.2 strain がサーベイランス part of sewage surveillance work の中で確認されたが、14日の時点では依然として JN.1 が the most prevalent variant in the city としている。
Health authorities also said the latest sewage surveillance data as of Tuesday [14 May 2024] showed JN.1 and its descendant lineages accounted for 98.8% of all detected specimens in Hong Kong.
KP.2, a strain deriving from JN.1 は，陽性検体 the COVID-19 specimens tested の約15%を占めていると説明されている。
The World Health Organization は KP.2 を a variant under observation リストに指定している。

2023年以降、コンゴ（民）では主に a distinct MPXV clade I によるエムポックス・アウトブレイク an ongoing mpox outbreak が続いており、当局によれば、Clade I は、the global outbreak-associated clade II に比べて病原性が高く high virulence，致死率が高い特徴を有している。さらに MPXV clade I による感染伝播が起きているのは、主に女性の性産業従事者らによる、性行為を介した異性間感染であると説明されている。
同時に a new variant of the MPXV, named "clade 1b"が、コンゴ民主共和国の鉱業地域 during epidemiological week 16 of 2024 from 14 to 20 Apr 2024 in Kamituga, a mining enclave within the DRC で新興している。この変異株は感染力が高く、主に性的接触による感染で、パンデミックの可能性が懸念されている。
