転倒して足を負傷した40歳男性が、高熱となり下肢が壊死し，ビブリオ・バルニフィカス菌 the "flesh-eating bacteria" _Vibrio vulnificus_ 感染と診断された。塩水や汽水に生息しエビやカキに寄生する菌で（ヒトの）血液感染症の原因となり、致死率は最悪の場合50％、敗血症性ショックとなれば90％に達する。
生来健康で船員 a ship driver として働いており持病はなかった。転倒し負傷したが自ら貼付剤とオイル rubbing oil を塗るだけで医療機関を受診しなかった。4日後、下肢の発赤、腫脹、水疱が始まり拡大した。近医の治療は効果がなく、熱帯病中央病院 the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases に搬送されたときには、重症菌血症により、太股までの足全体が皮下出血 bruised, 水膨れ blistered, 真っ黒 blackened の状態になっていた。

20 New World screwworm cases confirmed in Belize
The Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic has issued a warning about the growing New World screwworm threat in southern Belize.
The clinic's warning stems from the Ministry of Agriculture's 20 confirmed cases of the parasite, first detected on 26 Dec [2024] in Toledo District. Despite efforts to contain the outbreak, 19 more cases have surfaced this year [2025]. This is including the first dog infection in January [2025].

Following the reopening of the United States border for the importation of Mexican calves 13 days ago, the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO) received a report of a new case of the cattle screwworm (_Cochliomyia hominivorax_) in the state of Tabasco.
The outbreak in the south of the country, near the border with Guatemala, was identified in 4 cattle that had wounds containing larvae of the parasite.

What the livestock sector of Yucatan had been fearing for several weeks has finally happened: the first case of screwworm was detected on a ranch in Tzucacab.
